Our Journey Toward Peace

Church Women United of Delaware County held its Interfaith World Community Day celebration at Temple Beth El on November 3, 2017. The theme of the meeting was “Our Journey Toward Peace.” The program opened in the temple’s community room with a musical program played on the piano followed by the joyful singing of “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” Therese Weakland, the guest speaker for the morning, movingly recounted her life in Hungary before the War and how she survived the War years. Anne Eliades, president of Temple Beth El, then gave an explanation of Judaism and a brief history of Temple Beth El.

Special recognition of Yvonne Thompson followed readings from Scripture and a period of prayer.

Guests were then invited to tour the rest of the synagogue, including the sanctuary. One of the scrolls of the Torah was taken out of the Ark and partly un-scrolled so that people could see a section of the text. The scrolls are written by specially-trained scribes in ink with a quill pen on sections of parchment that are stitched together by hand.
